Modern building materials and high performance waterproofing techniques have revolutionised basement conversions. Cavity drainage membranes applied to walls and floors control and divert water ingress to an appropriate drainage point with little preparation required to the substrate. The problem of no natural drainage can be overcome by the installation of channelling to a mechanical sump pump. The membranes can then be plastered or finished with an insulated dry lining system to combat condensation. Floors can be screeded or boarded over the waterproofing system.
